YOUTH ENTREPRENEURS MEAN BUSINESS AT BLYTH MARKET
22/05/2014
Youngsters will be unleashing their entrepreneurial side at the Market Place in Blyth this Saturday, 24 May, as part of an initiative encouraging young people to get involved with their local market.
The youths, aged between 16 and 25, have taken advantage of the introduction of a new scheme which offers them market stall pitches at a reduced cost of £5 for the day. Budding young entrepreneurs can have one stall free of charge by attending a three hour workshop on business advice.
This Saturday is the first of five youth markets being run by Blyth Town Team on the last Saturday of each month until September. If the scheme proves to be successful, the youth market will be a regular feature at Blyth throughout the year.
Andy Rutherford, head of highways and neighbourhood services at Northumberland County Council said: “We are always keen to welcome new traders to our markets across the county.
“The youth market scheme hopes to encourage a new generation of retail entrepreneurs. It might be just an experience, or it could be the start of a new career in business.”
Michael Nicholson of the Blyth Town Team said: “The youth market is an exciting opportunity for young people to be entrepreneurial and gain commercial experience whilst earning some money. It will take a few months to establish a presence but we hope that young people take advantage of this offer and would urge anyone who is interested to get in touch.”
The council is currently taking part in the Love Your Local Market fortnight. The campaign celebrates the role of markets in sustaining town centres and communities and encouraging people to shop locally.
Blyth Youth Market is supported by Blyth Town Team, National Market Traders Federation, Northumberland County Council, Blyth Town Council, Business Northumberland, Morrison's and Blyth Academy.
For enquires about the youth market and to request a stall at the next market, please contact Karen Walker at Blyth Town Team, via email: karen@blythtownteam.net

Love Your Market
18/06/2013
Northumberland’s markets are taking part in the high profile, 2013 national Love Your Local Market campaign which is led by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) and backed by Central Government and the wider market industry.
The council is supporting the “Love your local market” campaign which is in its second year and this year will run for two weeks from May 15 to May 29.
The fortnight will provide a national spotlight on markets across the country. The main aim of the campaign is to recruit new market traders and also to demonstrate the importance of the market as a community asset. The campaign aims to build affection and support for markets and enhance their status within the local community.
National Market Fortnight in Northumberland will see budding business people have the opportunity to try out market trading for just a tenner. Stalls are being offered at markets managed by Northumberland County Council for just £10 a day to attract new market traders and provide opportunities for new and start-up businesses.
Anyone can be considered for a trial stall – from enterprising high school or college students to retired people looking for a small business interest. It might be just an experience, or it could be the start of a career in market trading.
Market Cash Could Benefit All of Town
25/04/2013
Market bosses say a cash injection planned to improve Blyth market could have a big impact on the whole of the town.
Blyth Town Council is preparing to invest £4,000 to make the market square, which has come under fire from traders and residents, a better place to visit.
The council is providing new tables, covers for stalls, a new website and stickers promoting the online information for traders’ vans.
Northumberland County Council is helping by offering new traders the first three months free alongside a ‘Love your local market campaign’, and Blyth Town Team is putting together a marketing group to encourage new traders to the town.
